Job Summary:

The position requires a strategic approach to the development of services and structures, embracing continuous quality improvement and technological development and the management of changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives.

 

Responsibilities

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

 

  1. At present the hours of attendance are between 8.00am to 8.00pm with a luncheon interval of one hour.
  2. Report to the Chief Medical Scientist in the Histology Department, however the chosen candidate may be required to report on a day to day basis to designated senior staff e.g. Senior Medical Scientist.
  3. To perform Histology work to the highest professional standards as determined by the Consultant in Charge/Chief Medical Scientist.
  4. Participate in training staff as required.
  5. Ensure, in co-operation with the Consultant in Charge/Chief Medical Scientist  /designated senior staff, appropriate compliance with International and National Guidelines and standards for the provision of a Histology Laboratory service and actively participate in internal and external quality control.
  6. Actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the position.
  7. To actively participate in the Department's continued commitment to accreditation to ISO15189.
  8. Co-operate in evaluating equipment, consumables and research projects.
  9. Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or hospital information.
  10. The chosen candidate will participate in ensuring that effective safety procedures are in place to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act.
  11. Assist and co-operate with the Laboratory Management Team in developing procedures to be followed in preventing and managing accidents occurring in the work area.
  12. To perform such other duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned to him/her by an officer designated by the Board in consultation with the Consultant in Charge/Chief Medical Scientist / Laboratory Manager. As per MF-GEN-0098 contained in staff members training folder.

Qualifications

Selection Criteria:

Mandatory:

  1. (a) Candidates for appointment must possess:

  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree.
  • Anatomy and Physiology, or equivalent, components of Undergraduate degree.

And

(b) Candidates must have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

 

If an appointee has previously been employed in the Civil or Public Service and that appointee is entitled to or in receipt of a pension from the Civil or Public Service or where a Civil/ Public Service pension comes into payment during the appointee’s re-employment that pension will be subject to abatement in accordance with Section 52 of the Public Service Pensions (Single Scheme and other Provisions) Act 2012.
