Senior Director – Pipeline – HIV & Emerging Viruses

At Gilead, we are driven to develop lifesaving products that make a difference for patients around the world. Every day, we transform the promise of science and technology into breakthrough, innovative therapies that have the power to cure, prevent or treat disease. As a research-based biopharmaceutical company, we are revolutionizing healthcare by bringing medicines to patients in the areas of unmet need including HIV, COVID19, liver diseases, hematology and oncology, and inflammation and respiratory diseases. When you join Gilead, you join our mission to change the world by enabling people to live healthier and more fulfilling lives.

Making an impact on a global scale

For over 30 years, Gilead has been a leading innovator in treatments and/or prevention for HIV, viral hepatitis, and/or COVID19.  Despite advances, these and other viruses continue to have significant impact on people and patients globally. In this role, you will have responsibility for delivering commercial support and feedback into development of pipeline assets across HIV and other emerging viruses, as well as leading early commercialization activities for our drugs.  Through work to design product profiles and build business cases, you will represent the market and commercial voice into Gilead’s pipeline.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director, Pipeline Lead, Global Commercial Strategy & Operations, HIV & Emerging Viruses, this role supports new and ongoing programs in the referenced therapeutic areas. The role requires collaboration in a cross-functional environment to deliver robust commercial assessments, provide commercial feedback into development programs, and lead key initiatives for future products as well as clearly representing commercial viewpoints within program teams and Gilead governance. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Lead Early Commercialization Teams: Develop aligned commercial perspectives and act as the commercial voice and support Program Strategy Teams from pre-clinical stage to phase III initiation. Facilitate transition to inline teams for launch preparedness as programs enter late-stage development, with potential to directly lead transitions and launch planning in the future.
  • Evaluate Commercial Opportunities: Develop business cases for pre-clinical assets under development. Establish strong partnerships with R&D to ensure plans deliver differentiated products and commercial value. This may also include support for business development to identify and assess opportunities for potential acquisition and partnering.
  • Support Progression of R&D Programs: Understand disease states, unmet need, and treatment landscapes to define target product profiles and recommend strategic options to maximize program value and benefit for patients. Ensure that product development considers long-term commercial objectives (e.g., through trial endpoints, comparators, target product profiles, and other value drivers).
  • Lead Early Commercialization Work: For pipeline programs, potentially including communications strategy, co-positioning, branding, naming, packaging, development of support services, etc.
  • Establish Partnerships with Cross-functional Teams: Collaborate with Global Value & Access, Global Decision Sciences & Insights, Medical Affairs, and selected country teams to identify insights, share global perspectives, and integrate into global strategies. Liaise with regional leadership on strategic choices.
  • Benchmark for Success: Ensure the successful development of differentiated molecules that maximize overall commercial value and patient reach.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

We’re seeking a strategic, influential leader with:

  • Leadership Experience: At least 12 years of relevant leadership experience in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry, including strategic planning and lifecycle brand management.
  • Substantial HIV/Virology or Product Development Experience

  • Opportunity Assessment: Strong experience in commercial evaluation of partnership and pipeline opportunities. An opportunistic thinker with strong judgment and an analytical mindset.
  • Collaborative Skills: Ability to develop deep and credible collaborations with partners in Medical Affairs, Research, Development, Value & Access, and Regulatory groups, as well as senior leadership.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work successfully with varied audiences and executives.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical skills demonstrated by the ability to identify and interpret complex issues and provide recommendations to senior management and across functional areas.
